Acknowledgement of Country
We would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land, the Wulgurukaba people. We also acknowledge their neighbouring brothers and sisters on the land, the Bindal people. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging. May we walk gently and peacefully on this land together.
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers, Staff and Students
Welcome to Week 10 and the final Newsletter for Term 2. This term has been full of activities, particularly in the last couple of weeks. There have been Year Level Masses, a Photoshoot, Interschool Sport, a Robotics Competition, Readers Cup, Year 6 Camp, the Project Rockit sessions and the Drama Concert last night.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Murrell for a truly entertaining Drama Concert. Mrs Taylor and myself were very impressed, not only with the performances but with the engagement and enjoyment evident in the students. Tonight we have the Music Showcase, where students showcase what they have been learning in their Instrumental lessons this semester. I am sure it will be another entertaining evening. Thank you to Miss Di Bella, Mrs McCluskey and Mrs Bourne for preparing the students.
In amongst these activities, teachers have been writing Semester 1 Report Cards which were made available to families yesterday afternoon. I usually give tips from Michael Grose around Report Card time, however these tips from Teach Starter are very good:
Take time one-on-one: Find a quiet time and place to sit one on one with your child to talk to them about their report card. This can be challenging when you have more than one child to speak with, however, it is even more important if your kids tend to try and compare their own report with their siblings.
Focus on Effort over Grades: An effort mark is by far one of the most important aspects of every child’s report. It is the aspect of their schooling that they have the most direct control over. Combined with the teacher’s comment, effort marks help you to understand your child’s attitude towards learning. Focusing on effort over achievement isn’t going to reduce your child’s motivation to work hard. Rewarding effort is especially important for kids who ‘struggle’ academically. If your child is focused on trying their best and feels that their efforts are seen and valued, they are going to be much more resilient learners. Resilient learners enjoy learning, continue to challenge themselves and are more comfortable making mistakes. These are extremely valuable life-long ‘soft-skills’.
Address Comparison: Help your child understand that everyone is different. Everyone excels (and struggles) in different areas. Try to avoid comparisons between their report card and their siblings’ or classmates’ reports. Instead, focus on where they have tried their best, as well as the learning areas in which they achieved well or made a great improvement in.
Consider Setting an Individual Learning Goal: If a child's report identifies an area of challenge, whether academic or social, to improve in this area could become a learning goal. If your child absolutely adores a certain subject area, perhaps they would like to focus on improving their effort or achievement in that area. You may like to compare your child’s current report card to their previous one, to help them see their progress. This is one type of report card comparison that is helpful! Identify any areas of continued struggle and discuss why your child may still be falling short of their goals. Praise improvements made and their areas of growth.
Enjoy the rest of your week.
God bless
Tracy

Reader's Cup
Last Tuesday evening two teams of five students represented St Joseph's Mundingburra at The North Queensland Regional ReadersCup Challenge. The Challenge is a state wide competition for young readers. There were 25 teams involved in the Year5/6 competition on the night. It encourages young readers to read widely, work collaboratively in a team and continue to develop a love of reading. Our teams prepared by meeting 2 and 3 times every week this term. Each member was expected to read the five designated books. Both of our teams did their best on the night. Well done to Cleo, Brooke, Hannah, Lillian, Dayley, Xavier, Anthony, Nate, Lillian and Gemma.
