Acknowledgement of Country
We would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land, the Wulgurukaba people. We also acknowledge their neighbouring brothers and sisters on the land, the Bindal people. We pay our respects to elders past, present and emerging. May we walk gently and peacefully on this land together.
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers, Staff and Students
Last Monday, St Joseph’s Catholic School Mundingburra celebrated the Feast Day of our patron saint St Mary MacKillop. The day commenced with a special Liturgy to which all members of our school community were invited. Students then shared in a Feast Day cake which was distributed at morning tea. Following morning tea, a variety of activities were held under the shed and on the oval. Staff were very impressed with the way our students participated in these activities. They were respectful when lining up, patient while waiting their turn and politely followed all instructions given by staff. It was wonderful to have 360 odd students not only enjoying themselves, but also ensuring others were enjoying their time through their thoughtful actions. St Mary MacKillop would have been very proud.
The spirituality of St Joseph’s Mundingburra is based on the lives of St Joseph and St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, the traditions of the Sisters of St Joseph and the faith of the community. Alongside Julian Tenison-Woods, Mary co-founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart (Josephites) and established schools and places of refuge for the working class and poor across Australia and New Zealand. Our school name reflects that we are a Josephite school initiated by the Sisters of St Joseph.
St Mary MacKillop is one of the most significant historical and religious figures in Australian history, and is the first Australian to be recognised by the Catholic Church as a saint. She has motivated many to live humbly and to assist those in need within the community. The legacy and work of St Mary MacKillop, and the ongoing work of the Sisters of St Joseph, can be seen across the many Catholic schools around Australia founded or inspired by their work. St Mary MacKillop continues to provide inspiration to Catholic leaders, educators and students across Australia who identify with her vision and spirit.
Our ‘Love is Service’ Motto challenges us to be deeply respectful and compassionate towards others and be aware of and try to meet the needs of all. In the words of Julian Tenison-Woods and in the deeds of St Mary MacKillop, we aspire to ‘Never see a need without doing something about it’ and in the actions of St Joseph, we see a foster father who placed his love at the service of Jesus.
Enjoy the rest of your week.
God bless
Tracy

Our last 2 lessons for our Sacramental Program will take place on Sunday 20th and Sunday 27th August. The celebration masses will take place on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th September. Last week I sent out an email letting families know which celebration they are attending.
As part of the Sacramental Program this year, there is an opportunity for students to participate in an optional retreat. It will be held on Thursday 25th August 3:30 - 6:00pm. The retreat is an opportunity for students to consolidate their understanding of the Sacraments of Confirmation and Holy Communion through prayer, creative experiences and a shared meal.
The retreat will begin in the Library at 3:30pm and conclude in the School’s main Covered Area at 6:00pm. The retreat will be run by Peta and Clare and supported by teachers from the School. An email with more details will be sent to families.

Homeless Sleepout
On Friday 24th August some of our Mini Vinnies students will attend a Vinnies Sleep Out at Marian School. The Vinnies Sleepout allows students to get a glimpse of the realities of homelessness on a personal level by ‘sleeping rough’ for one night. The Sleepout encourages students and teachers to gain a deeper understanding of homelessness, raising awareness of the realities faced by people experiencing homelessness. Thank you to Mrs Plant for her organisation with this event and to our teachers who have generously volunteered to assist.
If you would like to help out in any way donations of cash, pillows and blankets are welcome. These can be dropped into our school office and will be passed on to St Vincent De Paul at the sleepout.
Year Level Masses
Year Level Masses are an important part of the Religious Life of our school here at St Joseph’s Mundingburra. Each term the students in the upper grades have the opportunity to participate in Mass with their teachers, friends and family.
Year 5 will attend mass today and Year 4 Mass will take place on Monday 29th August. The masses take place in the Church, starting at 1:35pm. Parents and families are welcome to join us. Last week Year 6 participated in their Year Level Mass.
Assembly
Assemblies take place in the Shelter Shed on Monday mornings at 8:40am. Next week’s assembly will be hosted by 5A. 4A will host our assembly in Week 8. 5B will host our Father’s Day assembly in Week 9.
Christian Meditation
Christian Meditation will take place on Thursday mornings at 8:00am in the Library. Meditation is a form of sacred and silent prayer, known as prayer of the heart. It is a lovely way to start the day! Parents are welcome to attend.
May God’s blessing be with you all. Peta

Diary Dates
From the Office
Term 3 school fees have been issued. These were sent via email. Please check your spam/junk folders and if you have not received your statement, please contact the office. Due date for payment is Friday 2 September. Please attend to any overdue accounts.
Is your child absent from school? Please notify the office via
- emailing absent@sjmbtsv.catholic.edu.au
- calling the office and leaving a message at the absent option
- parent/guardian can note the absence through Compass
A text message will go out at 9.30am to any parents whose child is marked absent without an explanation. Please reply to this text using one of the above methods. If your child arrives after 8.30am, they must pass through the office for a late pass so that if the role has been marked at the classroom, office staff can make the ammendment for the arrival. We thank parents for assisting with this. Roles are marked promptly at 8.30am on Mondays due to assembly - students are required to collect a late pass before moving to assembly if they are late.
If your child is missing their school jumper, please check lost property located outside the tuckshop. There are a number of jumpers there. A reminder also to please ensure that all items are clearly labelled with your childs name so they can find their way back to them.

Parish Feast Day Celebrations
Mary MacKillop Parish celebrated the Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop with a High Tea (morning tea) which was held at St Joseph's school after the 7:30 am Mass. It was a lovely celebration for all who attended, and it was great to see students and staff from St Margaret Mary's and St Joseph's come along. The Parish and school communities are certainly well blessed under the patronage of St Mary MacKillop.
Mary MacKillop Feast Day
St Joseph's students participated in a variety of activities to celebrate Mary MacKillop Feast Day at school. It was a wonderful day of remembering how blessed we are as a school community and how lucky we are to have the wonderful example of St Mary MacKillop to aspire to.
Year 3 Excursion to Jezzine Barracks
Our year 3 students headed off on their excursion to Jezzine Barracks yesterday. The students were a delight to take out and represent our school. They were thoroughly engaged in the tour of the museum. The staff at the museum complimented us on how 'beautiful' the children were and they used impeccable manners. Students, Staff and parents had a great time!
Interschool Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to our St Joseph's Athletics Team who were the overall winners of the Inter School Athletics Carnival which was held at the Townsville Sports Reserve. We also won the School Averages trophy. Well done staff, students and parents/carers, it was a team effort.
Interschool Sport - Year 6
Year 6 attended interschool sport, we had 1 boys and 1 girls team attend touch with Miss Weinheimer and Mr Barton. While neither team took out a win in Division 1, they both worked incredibly hard throughout the season. We had 1 boys team and 2 girls teams attend soccer with Mrs H. While the boys did not take out a win, the girls collectively shared the win for Division 3. The children learnt how to play together as a team, develop skills and display sportsmanship. It was wonderful to see everyone enthusiastically participate in interschool sports this season.
