Acknowledgement of Country
We respectfully acknowledge the past and present traditional owners of this land on which we stand, the Wulgurukaba and neighbouring Bindal people who are the custodians. We pray that we can walk together to a better future.
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers, Staff and Students
Welcome to Week 8. How quickly the weeks are flying by. We have had staff, students and parents/carers involved in a number of competitions and special events over the past two weeks. These include Book Week and the fabulous Book Week Parade, the Sacramental Retreat, Year Level Masses, the Vinnies Sleep Out, the Opti Minds Challenge, the Interschool Robotics Competition held on site at St Joseph’s and the Bebras Competition held this morning in our Computer Lab.
We are also lucky at St Joseph’s to have our annual Father’s Day Stall open in the Library today and tomorrow for students to purchase a Father’s Day gift for their father or father figure. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Mrs Harper and Mrs Lyons, as well as their trusted band of P & F helpers for organising this year’s Father’s Day Stall. Thank you also to those parents/carers who have volunteered their time to help out. Mrs Harper was pleased with the response to this ‘call out’ for helpers, particularly with how busy all our lives are. These events cannot happen without people willing to facilitate and assist
I have to say that I feel extremely blessed to be part of this very special school community. We have staff and parents/carers willing to give of themselves and their time so that our students can extend their learning and skills through participation in a variety of extra curricular activities. Over the weekend, we had staff give up their Friday evening and Saturday morning so our Mini Vinnies students could participate in a Vinnies Sleep Out. The Opti Minds Challenge was on Saturday, and we had staff present supervising students at this event, not to mention our staff who prepared the students. The Sacramental Retreat was a wonderful experience for students involved in this year’s Sacramental Program. It was well organised by Mrs Taylor and, again, we had a number of staff willing to remain at school until after 6 pm to assist with activities. Likewise the Inter School Robotics Competition which took place on Monday afternoon after school. St Joseph’s Mundingburra hosted this event, with a number of Catholic and state schools bringing along teams. Mrs Cantoni put a lot of effort into setting up for the event and organising a variety of challenges which tech-minded students would enjoy. If you attended our recent Book Week Parade, you would have seen the planning and effort which went into providing this entertaining show. Thank you to our Book Week Duo, Mrs Harrington and Mrs Luton.
Unbelievably, there are still more events to come with Festival of Sport tomorrow, Sacramental celebrations over the weekend, the Father’s Day Breakfast, Eisteddfod, Showcases, Pirate Day, Quest for Knowledge and Eco Warriors Day. Please also remember that this Friday is a Pupil Free Day.
This weekend we celebrate Father’s Day. A wonderful tradition that most families will celebrate by doing something special with the father figure in their life. It is a day we say thank you to our Dads for all they do to support us in our lives. The role of Father has changed some in these modern times. There is still the traditional role of father but there are other male role models like step-fathers, grandfathers, brothers, godfathers, and special friends that are honoured on this day. It really doesn’t matter how they step in to show guidance, love and help we take the time today to say thank you.
I wish all of our St Joey’s fathers and father figures a wonderful Father’s Day on Sunday. Below is a verse from Pope Francis for fathers and father figures on Father’s Day.
St Joseph is the model of the educator and the dad, the father.
I, therefore, entrust to his protection those who are fathers.
Best wishes to you on your day!
I ask for you the grace to be ever closer to your children, allow them to grow, but be close, close!
They need you, your presence, your closeness, your love.
May you be for them as St Joseph was: guardians of their growth in age, wisdom and grace.
May you guard them on their journey: be educators and walk with them.
Thank you for all you do for your children: thank you.
May St Joseph bless you and accompany you.
Pope Francis
Enjoy the rest of your week.
God bless
Tracy

Vinnies Sleepout
On Friday night a small group of our Year 6 students combined with students from Marian and St Joseph's, North Ward to participate in the Homeless Sleepout. Throughout the night the student participated in a range of activities to develop their understanding of homelessness. Members from St Vincent De Paul also came and spoke to the students. Thank you to Mrs Jones from Marian for organising such a meaningful night for the students. Thank you also to Mrs Plant and Miss DiBella for giving their time to help out with the event.
Assembly
Assemblies take place in the Shelter Shed on Monday mornings at 8:40am. Next week’s Father's Day Liturgy will be hosted by 5B. 4B will host our assembly in Week 10.
Christian Meditation will take place on Thursday mornings at 8:00am in the Library. There will be no Meditation on Thursday 1 September. Meditation is a form of sacred and silent prayer, known as prayer of the heart. It is a lovely way to start the day! Parents are welcome to attend.

Book Week Parade 2022
Last week the whole school celebrated Book Week with the announcement of the Best Book of the Year Awards for the CBCA Book Week (https://cbca.org.au/winners-2022), the highlight on our literacy library calendar! The winners were announced at last Monday’s Assembly, with promotion of the books and our upcoming Book Week Parade :
Brilliant authors and illustrators Shirley Marr, Claire Saxby, Andrea Rowe, Safdar Ahmed and Michelle Pereira were spotlighted this year as winners!
Of course, the highlight was the exciting Book Week Parade, and congratulations go to all the students, staff and parents for their fantastic efforts in costuming and dressing up in their favourite book character for the Book Parade! Boris and Mr Wolf kept the crowd entertained during the Parade bringing joy to the audience, not forgetting the last-minute Grinch arrival!
The theme this year, ‘Dreaming With Eyes Open’, encompassed all the genres and the imagination of the St Joseph’s students! The atmosphere was amazing last Tuesday, it was truly a fabulous celebration of books, music and drama and for all the children, showing the joy and excitement of books and reading!! This year we welcomed the St. Mary MacKillop Kindy again, as well as the Miniversity kids joining our St Joseph’s celebration!
Throughout the Book Week at lunchtime, Guest Readers spotlighted our Book Week authors in the library! A big thank you to Mr Feaver, Ms McMahon, Mrs Plant, Mrs Connell and our own Principal, Mrs Nuttall!
Art and craft activities were held every day with emphasis on a particular Shortlisted Book with lots of sparkles and whales!
Mrs Luton’s Dream Catchers display by students for Book Week was a hit! Also, some students reading up a storm for the ‘4 Week Reading Challenge’ in the library for the last month. (Please drop in your Challenge Sheet to the library to Mrs H., for a prize!)
A terrific week with the Book Week celebrations, we also had the first ever Australian School Library Day on the 24th August 2022 announced!
The library was open with our ‘iceberg reading area’ with whale song and morning bird music in our ‘bush setting reading area’ (a favourite with students, reading during the school week or at lunchtime), was open to parents!
Book Week and the Book Week Parade are a fantastic way of celebrating and honoring books and Australian authors who won, but the goal is the promotion of a love of reading for every child!!!!
Happy reading everyone!!! Never be without a book!!!
BOOK CLUB ISSUE 6 CLOSED ON THE 29 AUGUST 2022.
EBOOK Hub will be open this Wednesday lunchtime instead of the normal Thursday, due to Mrs H. being away Thursday!

Optiminds Challenge
St Joseph's Mundingburra had three teams who participated in the OPTIMINDS Challenge at JCU on Saturday. Staff, parents and students had a great day, with the students doing an amazing job in each of their categories. Our Group 2 students, Eamon, Zavier, Grace and Harper received an Honours in the Social Sciences category. Congratulations! Thank you to Mrs Lane and Miss Kellie for preparing the students. Thank you to Mrs Connell and Miss D who supervised the students on the day and thank you Mrs Plant for taking on a judging role. We are very proud of all who participated.
Interschool Robotics Competition
On Monday our school hosted the Inter-school Robotics Competition.St Joseph's had two teams of students participating. Teams were required to program their robots to complete three tasks which involved following set courses using a variety of moves, coding the colour and ultrasonic sensors to detect obstacles along the way and a final challenge which involved building grippers and programming the motor to collect as many flags as possible. The students made our school proud with their dedication, problem-solving and team work skills. Congratulations to Chase, Eamon and Anthony as their team scored the highest points and won the competition. Well done to all of our students participating and also to Townsville Grammar and Annandale Christian College who took out second and third place. Special mentions to our senior girls Sophie, Harpa and Violet for assisting with the organisation of each task throughout the event.
