Acknowledgement of Country
We respectfully acknowledge the past and present traditional owners of this land on which we stand, the Wulgurukaba and neighbouring Bindal people who are the custodians. We pray that we can walk together to a better future.
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers, Staff and Students
Welcome back to our final term for the year. It is my hope you all enjoyed some quality time with family and friends over the school holiday break. I imagine the routines of school are now well and truly in motion once again, remembering it is quite a short sprint to the Christmas holidays. Term 4 is the shortest term of the year, and traditionally the busiest. The calendar on the school website has been updated to reflect Term 4 events and I have also sent a list of ‘date claimers’ for these activities to staff and families through Compass. More information about each of these events will be forthcoming through the school newsletter, class newsletters, Compass and social media, so please continue to access these communication channels.
Our Assembly yesterday was quite a long one, as there was much to celebrate and acknowledge. Throughout last term, and continuing this term, our students have been provided opportunities to participate in a wide range of activities including competitions. These competitions have included, but are not limited to, Japanese and Italian speaking competitions, Sporting competitions, Quest for Knowledge, STEM competitions, Optiminds, Library reading and writing competitions, Chess Club Tournaments, Music exams, Eisteddfod and tomorrow evening we have students participating in the Southern Cross Youth Speech Competition. Our staff do a fantastic job at both facilitating student participation and volunteering their time to assist students prepare. We are also grateful to our parents and caregivers who are willing to do what is necessary to enable their children to be involved if they so choose. It is a blessing to have a school community who are connected, and work together to enhance student opportunities and outcomes at St Joseph’s Mundingburra.
Towards the end of last term, a large number of our students in Years 3 - 6 participated in the Bebras Competition. There is more information about the competition and our results in this newsletter, however I would like to acknowledge the wonderful achievement across the board of St Joseph’s Mundingburra students. The value we, as a school, place on Digital Technologies and STEM activities can be seen through initiatives such as continuing to support the Junior Engineers Program, a specialist teacher for Digital Technologies lessons and the facilitation of a Tech Club. Mrs Cantoni brings a wealth of knowledge to this space, providing opportunities for students to be involved in activities such as Bebras, and also Robotics and Lego competitions through participation in Tech Club.
During Assembly we also learnt about the work our Reef Guardians have carried out throughout this year. It was amazing to hear about all of the wonderful environmental and sustainability initiatives they have put in place under the direction and guidance of Mrs Lazzaroni, whose knowledge and enthusiasm for environmental sustainability practices is being passed onto others in our school community. Each class has been charged with the responsibility of engaging in recycling, with buckets outside classrooms for poppers and plastic bottles being collected each day. An award is given during assembly each week for the class who has made the most effort with their recycling. Congratulations to 1B who has received this award more than once.
Finally I would like to wish Milly, Josh and Harper all the best. These three students are part of the Northern Track and Field team participating in the 2022 QLD School State Athletics Championships in Brisbane.
Enjoy the rest of your week.
God bless
Tracy

This month (October) is Catholic Mission Month, a time where we raise awareness of the work of Catholic Missions. We have a number of activities organised to take place throughout the month to raise funds.
We started on Monday with our crazy sock day, on Friday the 21st October we will hold a Free Dress Day, over the next two weeks there will be a Lolly Jar guessing game. Then in Week 4 on Monday 24th October, our Year 6 classes will be holding our Mission stalls and sausage sizzle. Donations of Pre-loved toys and books can be dropped off anytime before then. Donations of baked goods for the cake stall can be dropped off on the day (with ingredients listed). Students are welcome to bring in money to spend at the stalls, coins are preferred.
All of the money raised from these activities will go to the programs run by Catholic Missions Australia to help restore dignity and end poverty.
Christian Meditation
Christian Meditation will take place on Thursday morning at 8:00am in the Library. Meditation is a form of sacred and silent prayer, known as prayer of the heart. It is a lovely way to start the day! Parents are welcome to attend.
Assembly
Assemblies take place in the Shelter Shed on Monday mornings at 8:40am. Next week’s assembly will be hosted by 3A.

From the Office
Term 4 School Fees will be issued via email early next week.
Please check inbox/spam/junk mail.
Settlement of any overdue fees is now required.
Is your child absent from school? Please notify the office via
- emailing absent@sjmbtsv.catholic.edu.au
- calling the office and leaving a message at the absent option
- parent/guardian can note the absence through Compass
A text message will go out at 9.30am to any parents whose child is marked absent without an explanation. Please reply to this text using one of the above methods. If your child arrives after 8.30am, they must pass through the office for a late pass so that if the role has been marked at the classroom, office staff can make the ammendment for the arrival. We thank parents for assisting with this. Roles are marked promptly at 8.30am on Mondays due to assembly - students are required to collect a late pass before moving to assembly if they are late.
Student Protection Visit
Yesterday we welcomed two of our Townsville Catholic Education Student Protection team members to St Joseph's. Katherine and Christie conducted sessions on protective behaviours and cyber-safety with our Year 4 - 6 classes. Our students in Prep - 3 participated in a five week Act for Kids Program last term. The Learn to be Safe with Emmy and Friends program covered a number of protective behaviour strategies which were targeted towards a younger audience.

Reef Guardians
Welcome to Reef Guardians
Who are we? We are a group of like minded individuals who have a common goal of living sustainably to ensure conservation of our environment and animals in the air, land and sea.
When do you meet? Reef Guardians meet each Wednesday at morning tea, so really it is only 20 minutes where we learn about different issues impacting the environment as well as participate in some awesome and fun activities such as learning to create a Hugelkultur vegetable garden and a worm farm.
How can I join Reef Guardians? All students from Year 3-6 are welcome to join our group. There is no commitment to come each week, perhaps you may like to join in our activities once a month.
Why not take the time to come and have a look, remember, you are the future and looking after God’s home is paramount to sustain the population of both humans and animals.
We hope to see you soon!
Another initiative we have been working on our Environmental Award where we collect plastic bottles, poppers and cans when students have finished drinking them. Each class has a bucket for students to place their empty containers in and the Reef Guardians collect, count and sort this recyclable rubbish each day. Each week, our friend ‘Zippee the turtle’ spends a week with the class that collects the most recyclable bottles. The winning class also wins an environmental certificate.
This week, 1B was presented with their second Zippy award this year. Keep up the great work 1B!
Bebras Challenge
The Bebras Challenge is part of an international initiative whose goal is to promote computational thinking and Computer Science amongst students. Bebras is aligned with and supports the new Australian Digital Technologies Curriculum.
Students in Grades 3 - 6 competed in class teams to find solutions to 15 problems. These problems were called Bebras tasks which required students to think about logical digital technologies, data processing, and algorithmic concepts. The Bebras contest is coordinated by CSIRO to increase student participation in information and communication technology which can lead to an interest in pursuing a career in the ICT industry. All of our students performed extremely well and should be proud of their efforts.

Library News
This term the library continues to focus on developing and assisting students with support with their learning and information skills. Understanding concepts of, ‘Types of Genres’ and where to find them in the library, ‘Fact versus Opinion’, ‘Factual versus Fake News’ and ‘Fake Websites’, are all supporting student’s analysis skills. This week in the library, we looked at differences between ‘quoting, paraphrasing and summarizing’ information with Grade’s 5 and 6, to assist with their research skills.
Library Writing Competition
The winner of the library Roald Dahl Writing Competition – ‘Matilda, if she lived today! What would she be?’ was Sophie in year 6. Congratulations Sophie! Students were all given achievement awards at Monday’s assembly for their imaginative and ingenious letters to the library, about an older version of ‘Matilda’! Great writing! Well done to you all!
Students enthusiastically returned to the library enjoying the new books available for borrowing! Just a note, if you have any overdue books from Term 3, could you please return them to the library as soon as possible.
EBook hub recommences this term on Thursdays at lunchtime in the library.
See you there!
